Really a nice find!
I simply love the way the Märklin people "converted" their thoroughly German locos to a more American look by just adding the bull bar/ grille guard (the German term would be "Kuhfänger", cow catcher, which shows how unfamiliar this was in Germany).

I had an R 4000 once and it was a good runner as well. With the comparably big cylinders, these locos look a bit "top-heavy", but very characteristic. I would keep it in this "played with" condition, btw.
