Remembrance Day
11/11/2020

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

Australia's population was only 4,948,990 in 1914. In all, 416,809 Australians enlisted (all volunteers as Australia didn't have conscription) during the war and 334,000 served overseas. The AIF (Australian Imperial Forces) sustained approximately 210,000 casualties, of which 61,519 were killed or died of wounds, a casualty rate among the highest of any belligerent for the Great War.

My Alma Mater -

The Scots College
69th Annual Parade of Remembrance

Dear Jim
This year marks our 69th Annual Parade of Remembrance.

Traditionally we commemorate Remembrance Day with our Annual Parade of Remembrance which takes place at The Scots College Main Oval. Unfortunately with ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we are not able to proceed with the event this year.

Fortunately, the College was able to go back to its archives to retrieve some of its most memorable Remembrance Day Parades including 1973 (22nd Parade), 2011 (60th Parade) and 2018 (67th Parade and 125th anniversary of the College) to create a virtual service for you to enjoy.

You can view our 69th Annual Parade of Remembrance here which will be available to watch until Sunday 22 November.

Remembrance Day Address

This year we are honoured to have our Remembrance Day address delivered by Old Boy Mr Andrew Hastie MP ('00).

Mr Hastie completed a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in History and Philosophy through the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy. In 2006, he completed officer training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon and was deployed to Afghanistan as a Cavalry Troop Leader in 2009. A year later, he was selected for service with the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) as a Troop Commander, taking command in maritime and special reconnaissance capabilities. He was deployed to Afghanistan again in 2013 as a Troop Commander with the Australian Special Operations Task Group. During his service with the SASR, he was deployed to various tours in the Middle East and Indo-Pacific.
Mr Hastie resigned from the Australian Defence Force in 2015 to successfully contest the Canning by-election for the Liberal Party of Australia. He was re-elected in the general elections of 2016 and 2019.

Since 2017 Mr Hastie has served as Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security. His work has particularly focused on national security, including counter-terrorism, espionage and foreign interference.

“The armed forces and the people I served with have taught me compassion, dedication, honour and integrity. These are things that are needed in politics today.” Mr Andrew Hastie

We hope you enjoy the recording and take a moment to reflect on the profound service and sacrifice of our Scots Old Boys and staff.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Mr Geoffrey Ellerton ('73) who very kindly donated the 1973 Annual Parade of Remembrance footage which has been featured in this service.

Scots to the fore!
Dr Ian PM Lambert
Principal   Mr Mathew Collett ('86)
Old Boys' Union President
