There was a car right in front of us and one beside us when it happened. One of them had to have seen it, but nobody stopped. It sounded like an explosion when it hit the windshield. We were in a hurry, so I slammed it shut and drove home slow enough to avoid a repeat. Will have to look in the daylight to see what let loose or may have rusted away.
