RARE DOLL 378/1 BACK TO STEAM... ADDED ENDURANCE TEST VIDEO
« on: September 17, 2019, 04:09:09 pm »
Recently i had the good fortune to be given this rather sad and rare 110 year old Doll 378/1 engine covered in its thick Black paint overcoat , who can do this to an engine.
I had a picture of a Doll of the same type and could see the attractive colour it should be.
So began the long job of refurbishment, the whole boiler looked as if it had been in a cricket match... as the ball,   the end caps both leaked water and steam so had to be removed, the water filler bush and the steam pipe bush and pipe all were loose and leaking so removed....next was the boiler which has to be unsoldered from the fire box as it is attached by lugs.
The boiler was patched and repaired the bushes resoldered the end caps cleaned and re soldered back onto the boiler, then the boiler resoldered  back onto the firebox taking care not to melt the endcaps solder....this was followed by many hours of solder removal and polishing.
The base had so much Black paint on it that it took 3 coats of paint remover to get it off back to bare metal, it was then degreased and 2 coats of Hycote spray primer applied followed by 3 coats of Hycote Red gloss , this model had a lined edge to the base this was in Bright Yellow gloss .... i did this free hand using Humbrol enamel paint.
The last job was to solder the very thin steam pipe back on... a tricky job but luckily i have done many steam pipe soldering jobs so it was completed first time, after a test on air the engine was steamed .....
Here is the video of it in steam followed by some pictures of the journey....Steve

ENDURANCE TEST
IF YOU CANT SLEEP THIS IS THE VIDEO FOR YOU 😂
I REDUCED THE AMOUNT OF WATER IN THE BOILER AND THIS SOLVED THE PROBLEM OF CUTTING OUT AFTER 30 SECONDS ON START UP.... HERE IS 8 MINUTES OF PERFECT CONTINUOUS RUNNING FROM THIS 110 YEAR OLD DOLL 378/1

Well that scrubbed up well .
It was certainly well past the oily rag stage.

Thank you Bruce a happy ending for the engine the outcome was in doubt until it was completed mainly through boiler concerns...Steve

I have been thinking about the fast short run and water from the piston at the beginning of the run may have been due to over filling the  water in the boiler leaving not enough room for steam, it ran perfect in the 2nd half of the video when the water level decreased....the engine has had more perfect runs since the video with less water so my fault to much water ::) ...thats my theory anyway...Steve

Hello Charlie practice makes perfect is the saying, but seriously i enjoy putting these engines back as they should look...Im afraid i cheated with the logo i copied and pasted from the internet its not perfect but good enough to represent what should be there...Steve
