Schoenner Lipsia restoration
« on: December 21, 2021, 12:45:29 pm »
Hi,

I got myself a Schoenner Lipsia on E-bay, this model was made around 1900 for the Leipziger lehrmittel anstalt.
It arrived in a pretty bad state, just a bit worse than I hoped for:

Anyway, I found some time to restore this machine, the boiler was the biggest challenge, it had additional holes and the holes for the level glass were missing.

The end result is OK, unfortunately one of the previous owner had cut some holes in the wooden base for a drive belt, which are hard to fix.

The both (Schoenner) LLA Lipsia and the model 1900 side by side:

I did no test run the Lipsia due to the missing burner.
I want to make a replica burner, so I would really appreciate if one of you Lipsia owners would share some picture and sizes of the orginal burners out there.

Regards,

Maurice.

I will make tomorrow some pictures of the burner
and measures. You did an excellent job on the Lipsia.
Congrats, Arnold

Nice work on the restoration Maurice.

A model that has eluded me for some time.

I am looking forward to seeing your burner.

Impressive sympathetic restoration, congratulations!

The burners of my two Schoenner Lipsia's (and the one of my Märklin Lispia, which has a similar burner) have much shorter wick-holder pipes, 2-3 cm above the deck of the burners. The filler screw has a short, rather sharply bent vent pipe.

I will take a photo, if you like, but I have to unearth the engine somewhere

Maurice, you have done a wonderful restoration job. Once again saved a machine that was worth it.

I wish you and everyone else a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Cheers

Hi all,

It seems that the Lipsia came with some differences over time, different burners, poppet valves, flywheels and even the level glasses came in 3 or 4 variants.
It is very hard to determine what belongs to a paticular model.

The Lipsia is a real eye-catcher in the collection.

I do this just for the fun and not as an investment, but the current prices on the market make this hobby almost impossible.

Thanks to all of you for your comments and contributions.

I wish you all a Marry Christmas and a Happy new Year.

Regards,

Maurice.

Hello Maurice,

here two photos of Lipsia burners.

The three wick burner is that of my Schoenner Lipsia poppet. It is very similar to that of my Schoenner Lipsia slide valve: three wicks, short holders (the filler plug is definitely not original).

The slightly longer one is that of a Maerklin Lipsia. It gives you an idea of how the filler plug might have looked like. I f you compare it to Arnold's photo above, that filler cap seems to be the same, only missing its top (the knurled cover).

I still wonder about the long wick holders of Arnold's burner. Might it be that his burner was originally fitted with vaporizers as well? Yes, there are no pilot wicks, but I have seen vaporizers without pilots (in Doll engines e.g.).

Interesting. You are right, Schoenners came in many variations (the water gauges are rarely the same in two engines...).
Perhaps we are going to see more burner variations!

And you are absolutely right about the prohibitive prices at the moment.

Happy X-mas and a wonderful New Year!

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the pictures, I believe that schoenner did not include vaporizer domes on these burners, I think that this is a Märklin thing.
The same goes for the Schoenner Zenith model which have a similar build burner, they seem to come with a strait pipe and the same filling plug.
The higher pipes might be an improvement in order to get a better heat distribution on the boiler, but thats just a guess.

All the best wishes and thanks again....

Regards,

Maurice

Maurice:

Do you have a burner for the Schoenner Vertical?

I have the same model.

Hi Charlie,

Unfortunately not, but I would appreciate a picture!
This is one of those very rare items, I couldn't even find much pictures of it on the net.

Any info is welcome...

Regards,

Maurice.
