Author Topic: Hobbing a Brass or Aluminium Drive Pulley to Stop Belt Slippage  (Read 48 times)

I've posted up photos before of hobbed pulley drives. It's a process that works very well and gives a professional result (very similar to what Wilesco does on their drive pulleys). I've done well over a hundred brass and aluminium drive pulleys now.

Hey Jim .... seen your hobbing plenty of times and think it is really great, though I rarely experience any serious belt slip, but then I don't run very load heavy accessories much. Really need to build myself a Baker Fan some one of these days ... but I digress.

What I would like to ask you is what sort of pulley groove do you prefer to do your hobbing on. I realize it can be done on most any form of groove, but am wondering what you find works best a slightly flared U-shaped groove or a V-shaped groove? If you prefer a V-shaped groove, what angle do you find most effective, 90, 120 or some other degree of divergence???

I enjoyed your video. I only wish i had the equipment and skills to use a lathe, etc.

I know a lot don't own or have access to a lathe, but heaps of people have gotten back to me on YouTube and said that they really wanted to hob some drive pulleys after seeing these and have gotten pretty much the same results using a tap in a drill press with a cross slide vice that can push the pulley onto the tap.

You show plenty of pulleys and some appear to have U-grooves while others look to have V-grooves. As I said before, I'm sure both work and likely work well for hobbing, but the simple question is whether you find one style to work better than the other for your purposes???

If you really cannot tell any significant difference, then that is valuable information as well.

BTW, that may well be a record number of photo attachments ..... well done!!!

I'm still of the view that you're overthinking and complicating something that, in practice, is actually a quite rudimentary straightforward process.

Whether they're steam engines or hit-and-miss engines, these machines are typically driving small accessories using most commonly 2 mm drive belts.

You asked a focused question but then went onto say, "I'm sure both work and likely work well for hobbing," which makes the question about whether the groove should be 90°, 120°, or some other angle academic.

I've personally hobbed hundreds of pulleys, both for myself and for many other hobbyists who have asked me to make them, and they've all worked perfectly well for their intended purpose.

I suggest that if you really want to investigate the academic and practical finer details of whether 90°, 120°, or another angle offers a measurable advantage on such small drive belts, then the best way for you to get that answer that you desire, would be through your own practical experimentation. Head out to the workshop, dust of your lathe and switch it on, turn up a selection of brass or aluminium pulleys, make a jig to suit the bore, grind a range of HSS cutters with different included angles, hob the pulleys, fit them to engines driving accessories, and compare the results. It doesn't take long to turn up a pulley, make a jig, put a tap in the three-jaw chuck and hob a pulley.

Once you've completed the practical testing, I'd genuinely be interested in reading a detailed write-up of your findings. A systematic comparison of the different groove angles, along with the research methodology, observations, and conclusions, would be far more valuable than theorising about it beforehand, I personally don't have the time nor the inclination because and I quote you once again "I'm sure both work and likely work well for hobbing".

Hi Jim,

Excellent video and photographs. I have used the system when ornamental turning, but never thought of using it on pulleys. I was taught to make a form tool with a radius of the core diameter of the thread and turn a groove to a little less than the radius of the core. Then use a similar system to yours to cut the thread? The only difference being the tap being supported by a male or female centre; the centre being a rod held by a Jacob chuck held in the tail stock. The work being done in brass and sometimes steel. I have used the system to make a worm and wheel gear arrangements.

Ah Jim .... certainly, I could perform such a series of experiments and might draw conclusions from them that could truly be significant or at the very least, be valid. However, I know a fellow who has made hundreds of these items in a variety of forms and so it seemed logical to me to simply ask him if he has ever noticed any significant differences in what actually works best, rather than going about reinventing the wheel myself.

Guess I was wrong about that.
