Hi,
There is a bit of tidying up to be done to what has already been made and the last working part to be made is the gas tank and its valve. It hasn’t yet been decided what shape of tank or where it will be situated and as the body might influence the decision it will be roughed out and possibly made next.
In Andrew Allison’s book it is suggested that as Ellie is adjustable 0/1 gauge it could be used in either 16 mm scale or G scale, however, figures of these scales would unless very tall not be able to see over the boiler. So, this version of Ellie will be made to 7/8ths scale allowing the drive to see over the boiler and also I haven’t built a model to this scale. Though this version of Ellie is some what different to the original specifications it is very nearly the same size and in 7/8ths scale would give an 18” gauge prototype 10 foot long 4 foot 6 inches wide and just over 8 foot high.
As Ellie for the most part has been made with materials to hand and wishing to carry on it the same way the stock of sheet metal was consulted and there were no suitable 1 mm thick sheets of either brass or steel. There was however a number of 1/16” thick sheets of brass which had had a previous life as kicking plates on the bottoms of doors. These were a bit thick but its 7/8ths scale and the extra weight will help adhesion.
First ideas were tried out using card board and then some brass was cut and shaped. Might not finish looking like this but it is a start.
Take care Tony.
