Track laying on a 16 mm scale layout.

Hi,

We have now de-camped from South Wales re-locating in the hills of Madeira for the next four weeks.  Before leaving as the work on the beam engine had been completed and young Gordon’s arrival on his usual Tuesday visit came about it was decided to make a start on preparing the track bed of the layout.  First the centre lines of both tracks were drawn on one of the curved base boards, clearance checks were made and then templates of the ballast and grass areas were cut from some 3 mm plywood.  With the ballast painted in and the grass laid it was nearly ready for the first of the track work to be laid.  The photographs I hope explain the details.

Hi,

After Gordon and I finished painting the ballast on the eight curved baseboards thoughts were turned to maybe laying a bit of track.  The track being used was reclaimed from my garden railway: the track’s wooden sleepers had rotted and had been replaced with Peco’s SM32 track which has plastic sleepers.  This left me with a lot of used and unused track and chairs.  The track to be used is Tenmille Bullhead track which uses plastic chairs which plug into the wooden sleepers.  The original sleepers of which I still have a lot of new ones and could get more are good for use in the garden (except for the rotting) but really are a little thick for use on a layout.  This coupled with trying to keep the track as low as possible to aid storage in its travelling trailer caused me to make thinner sleepers.  As somewhere near 1000 sleepers are needed this might take some time.  A lot of 3 mm plywood has been cut into 12 mm wide strips and stained.  A drilling and cutting jig has been made and hopefully the photographs will show the details.

Hi,

About 50 sleepers were cut and had chairs fitted so, a length of track was laid; my home-made rail bender was used to curve the rail which was then fitted with sleepers.  The track was secured to the layout by small screws through some of the sleepers.  For a bit of fun, a short length of ballast was laid using paint as an adhesive.  A couple of Ffestiniog carriages were run over the track, it is hope to be able to run at least some vintage toys on the layout to this end a test wagon has been made that uses a pair of Hornby tin plate wheels and their axles and  a pair of  Hornby plastic wheels and their axles.  The wagon runs freely on the track with no bumps over the chairs which causes some hope.

Further progress will not be possible until we get back to the UK early in March

Tony, I must say you have been constructing an amazingly well thought out portable railroad display!
