Latest Purchase
« on: March 27, 2021, 09:24:26 pm »
Never thought I’d be so excited to buy a minivan, but here I am!  :D

We were going to get one last spring, but with Covid we didn’t see the need as there was nowhere to go... We limped our old van through this past winter and after having the latch rust away and the hood flying into the windshield it was time we caved in and made the purchase. The nearly 300K miles and lots of rust on the old one also helped with the decision  :D

I am stoked to have stow’n’go seating! Don’t even want to think of how many times I have lifted seats in and out of the old one.  ::)

Here she is, hoping to put at least another 200K on this one!  ;D  Bring on the tractor show season and road trips!!  ;D

Also ordered this “free” tent today to go with it using the rewards off my Cabelas/Bass Pro credit card. Seems to be a lot of happy users in the reviews on different sites.

I was given one of these for a day when my Jeep was at the Dealership for warranty work, what I remember was thinking it was quite peppy...possibly I was just driving like I stole it...can't recall ;)

I bought one of these second hand in 2014 and have put over 100k miles on it since then--great vehicle. Not a fashion statement or macho, but the stow-n-go seats made it the only good choice for me. Unlike a pickup truck, you never have to worry about your contents being exposed to the weather or theft. I've moved several large hot air engines in the back and can even haul 4 x 8 ft sheets of plywood. The Dodge Grand Caravan was a great value but unfortunately is no longer offered--now we will have to pay a lot more for Chrysler's Pacifica model.

The unit in question was a White van, so your Silver may well have lived a relatively "stress" free life thus far.

This one is a 2018, quite an improvement over our 2005 Grand Caravan  :D  I am definitely not a fan of the Pacifica

3 years ago, Grandpa went to buy a 2016 and they were only going to give him $300 for the ‘05 with 180K miles. Luckily he didn’t “give” it to them and we ended up with it. Not even a couple weeks later we took it on a road trip from Minnesota to Wyoming. We’ve put a little over 80K miles on it the past 3 years and all I have replaced is the water pump ($35), radiator ($65), rear wheel bearing ($30) and of course tires and brakes. I have hauled many sheets of plywood, lots of sand and patio pavers, a few old gas engines and even steel tractor wheels.  :D  I don’t think my pickup has left the yard more than a half a dozen times over the past few years. When we only had 2 kids we would sleep in the Wal-Mart parking lot and throw the seats up on the roof.  :D

It's a real shame they're no longer being made--probably because of a much smaller profit margin compared to the Pacifica. I also have camped in the back on an air mattress at the Portland engine show which is fine in good weather. There were a few years where Dodge offered several engines in these vans around 2010, none of which were very good, but by 2012 they had settled on a good single design with good gas mileage to boot.

We threw the kids’ twin mattress in the back when we went out to NAMES :D

This one is a flex fuel, my mom also bought a 2018 last month and she has been running E-85 only as it’s available for roughly $1.65 here (regular is $2.89). I am still undecided about what to use in it... I have only filled it once and used regular. I believe you use about 1.4 gallons of E-85 to every gallon of regular. We bought this one down in central Iowa as it was quite a bit cheaper than anything up here and hoping it has seen less salt. I asked the salesman about using E-85 just to get another’s thoughts and he said he would definitely use it if it was the cheaper option, but in Iowa E-85 is nearly the same price as regular, so he said not worth it there.

I did some calculations once and figured it was cheaper to use regular 87 octane gasoline than E85 as you get poorer gas mileage with E85 even though it's cheaper at the pump. But it helps your midwestern farmers. The newer models are probably better, but I commonly get 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. If my wife is traveling with me we won't be "sleeping in a van down by the river" (thanks Chris Farley).

You mean help those midwestern farmers buy new pickups that cost more than my house  ;)  :D  I have a lot of farmers in the family and love picking on them  :D  heck I’d love to be one if I could afford to get into it!

Yes she does get worse mileage on the E-85, but if it’s a dollar or more cheaper per gallon than regular it figures out that it’s cheaper to burn E-85. I know they are made to run on it, just scares me to test it out...

Luckily my wife is just as cheap as me and refuses to pay for a hotel  :D  Maybe when the kids get a little older we can find a conversion van with a queen bed and throw the kids outside in a tent  :D
