A Pair Of M19 Hit & Miss Gas Engine Models
« on: May 15, 2021, 11:24:33 pm »
These are from Jin at Microcosm.

They are a scaled down modified version of Bob Shores Silver Angel design.
One of them was poorly adjusted which you will see in the video.

Below is a video of both of them.

Enjoy!

Bonjour Gil,
Lucky man ! I also have purchased this engine two weeks ago and would receive it on July !
I hope I won't have any problem with it... Were the gas needle settings correct when you started it for the first time ?
I will ask you more questions when I start mine, I don't know why, but with me it is always an adventure  :(

Neat little engine, if Jin would just put that set of functional "flying balls" on this M17, I would have to get one!

Bonjour ShadetreeMotorcycle,
Is this M17 a Hit and Miss engine, I do not see any governor ?
What would you think of this M92 ? :

Hello Raphael, the M17 does NOT hit and miss. I wish that it could.
I like the M92 Very much, so we'll in fact I have a new unfired M92 on my shelf.
I am hopeful Jin reads the forum and may yet build new versions that paying customers are asking for.
The M17 is a Much smaller brass engine with a nicer base...it lacks only a governor to be a Jemstone....IMHO

If the rocker arm weren’t so sloppy on the M19, I think it would run a lot nicer. The rest of the engine is built to a high degree of precision, but that rocker arm is something else.
I also have one where the governor balls were hitting the cylinder. The cam on the governor balls needs to be redesigned so they do not fly out as far. There is no need for them to be almost straight out.
I also bought a pair of them and the first one I got lost compression seconds after I started it the first time and has never run right since. It is also very hard to start. I’m pretty disappointed with that one to say the least. The other one I have runs as good as it can with that sloppy rocker arm.

Hello Junkologist, I can understand your frustration with issues with a brand new engine. I don't know what you plan to do with it, but my first thoughts are a valve stuck slightly open with the no compression issue, (so soon) it may need disassemble and a careful cleaning.
The sloppy rocker arm could also likely be repaired, but would need to see where the clearance issue is at.
Hope you get it going or maybe reach out to Jin?

Hi Mike, I checked videos of the engine Jin copied which is Bob Shores Silver Angel design modified.
Apparently one thing Jin did not modify was the way the balls go near straight out all the way.
All of them I could find on youtube are quite similar in that respect.
The governor arms are flying straight out nearly parallel to the ground.

I would agree a slight redesign would be helpful.

I think I would also like to see a clearly stepped latch-out as opposed to the present one which has a gradual slope meaning the exhaust valve eases shut  when it is more desirable to have it fully open until it is due for a power stroke.

The compression is leaking past the piston. If I put oil in the cylinder, the compression comes up for a few strokes until the oil gets pushed past the piston.

As for the rocker arm, I haven’t measured anything yet, but it appears that the pin is just undersized and makes for a very sloppy fit. There is just too much lost motion in the rocker arm for the detent finger to engage it consistently.

Gil,
I sent Jin a message about the problems I’m having and mentioned the weak spark. We’ll see what happens.

I don't know, but wonder if these are using an o-ring for piston seal like Jin's hit and miss M90 series.
It's possible the o-ring was cut on a sharp edge at assembly, something to consider....

Good advice. Check the o-ring.

I’ve got some new o-rings coming and I have an idea for fixing the issue with the governor balls hitting the cylinder. Never heard anything back from Jin.

Easy fix. Just loosen the governor gimbal collar with a small allen wrench and raise it 10-12/1000. There is just one set screw to loosen. Nothing comes apart. I did it with both of mine.
